As a coach who prescribes both diet and training plans to my clients, the area i see that most people have difficulties with is their diet. And by diet i don’t mean a calorie restricted eating plan, i mean, diet, as in how science uses the word. In other words the stuff you put in your mouth when you are hungry… or not, as the case may be. The you food you eat. All of of it.
One of the main problems is that people have grown accustomed to eating what are commonly referred to as empty calories. These are basically foods with loads of calories and very little nutrients. The problem with foods low in nutrients is that when the body goes looking for food, it is looking for more than just calories. The body is a wonderfully complex structure which requires a multitude of minerals, proteins, fats, salts, complex carbohydrates, vitamins and other trace elements. So when we eat a big old meal loaded with empty calories but low in nutrients, we aren’t giving the body what it was looking for.
So guess what happens…?
You got it.
A short while later your body starts sending hunger signals to you to start looking for food again.
Breads, cakes, biscuits, regular chocolate, packaged and canned processed food, pastas, sodas, crisps, fast foods… these are the main culprits when it comes to high calorie, low nutrient, hunger causing, weight gaining, ill health developing, bad, bad, bad… would do you no harm if you never ate them again, kinda foods.
Now i suspect you could have easily guessed most of, if not all of these, pretend foods. But even so, people are still eating them and what’s worse they are eating more of them than ever before. Now I could go on rating about this until this article turned it to 5 volume epic… but i’ll keep that for another day. So instead i’am going to give you five of the top nutritious foods that are just packed with stuff that you body is looking for every day… yum yum.
You gotta just love this stuff. Smoke it, bake it, fry it, poach it, stick it in a soup or a pie, it tastes great and is just packed with stuff to make your whole body function perfectly.
It’s packed full of protein, which will stave of hunger and of course feed your muscles.
It has has one of the highest grades and amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids, to combat heart disease and aid mental functions.
There is lots of potassium, magnesium, B-vitamins and selenium. Which will relax and heal the body.
People who have a diet rich in fatty fish like Salmon and Mackerel have lower risks of hearth disease, depression, dementia and get lets less colds and flu’s.
And did i mention just how great it tastes? Yes… but it worth mentioning again.
YUM, YUM, YUM… Love these little bark blue balls of wonder. The blueberry is a versatile little fruit that are great in any muesli mix, any salad combo, mixed with natural yogurt or just on their own.
Blueberries are just chock full of antioxidants, some of which have been shown to cross the blood brain barrier.
They have been shown to improve memory.
Lower LDL cholesterol (that’s the bad one)
Lower Blood pressure.
Not to mention that they have a good vitamin range and are low in calories.
Eggs have to be one of my all time favourite foods. You can just do so much with them. Fry them, hard boil them, poach them, scramble them, add them to salads, make omelettes with them, devil them, bake them…. and the list goes on and on.
For a long time these little power houses of a food got a lot of bad press, but not any more. Dietary cholesterol has long been shown now NOT to to be the cause of LDL building in the body. In fact a certain amount of cholesterol in the diet is vital. Testosterone and Oestrogen for example are both made from Cholesterol.
They have loads of the very highest quality protein with a full spectrum of amino acids.
They are loaded with antioxidants like Lutein, which protects the eyes and prevents muscular breakdown.
They have omega 3 fats.
They have a nutrient called Choline which nourishes the brain.
Kale is a truly amazing green leafy veg that is just so easy to use in stir fry’s or salads. It is one of the truly super food
It’s loaded with antioxidants, fibre, minerals and vitamins.
Vitamin-C: Prevents skin wrinkling, aids the immune system, can help prevent prenatal diseases, can prevent eye diseases.
Vitamin-A: Tackles free radicals, let you see the color purple, (the color and not the movie)
Vitamin-K1: Brain health, Osteoporosis, tooth decay.
As well as a large amounts of B-6, which aids, hair, eyes and skin.
Add to this certain bio-compounds found in kale have been show to kill cancer in test tubes and you can see see this is a must have green on your plate.
When it comes to chocolate and health the darker the better, and of course despite just how good for you this special nutrient rich food is you still need to remember that it is still chocolate and you should not be eating too much of it.
It comes with loads of Iron , magnesium and Copper, all very important elements. But Dark Chocolate’s trumps card is its abundance of antioxidants. They are so high in fact they even surpass our super, super-food, Kale. Its benefits include,
Supports brain function,
Fights Free radicals
Lowers blood pressure,
Reduces your rick of heart disease,
And lowers LDL cholesterol.
If you ever needed a reason to eat chocolate then take your pick. Just remember that the darker the better and the coco content needs to be over 70% to get the benefits. I love 85% myself.
